3 of 31. Rent is Due the Same Day as My Phone Bill

I’m only breaking

the lines

so you’ll think

this is a poem.  You see, I’ve got

a lot to do these days

(don’t we all)

and haven’t much time to

make something

new.  Poetry is always

setting down something

that wasn’t there, but I’ve been here

before.  Been waiting tables

for eight years now. The already

but not yet

of whatever

it is

that keeps me coming back

when it’s the same

damn thing that makes me

go.

Oh, I guess I’ll add an

internal rhyme or two,

skip the whining,

and end it on a

short note.

Beautiful and disheartening at the same time. This is real life and you paint it well.
